Learning at home can be difficult for some students. They are used to physically going to a different building to learn. There have been several studies and suggested on how to study at home effectively.
Create a space designated for schoolwork only. Having a separate space just for school helps tell the brain it is time to study, whereas the bedroom is associated with sleeping and relaxing. The area should also be tidy to decrease distractions. Create a to-do list If your student's teacher provides a weekly schedule of assignments create a list of all the tasks. Once the document is complete, pick one to two assignments every day. Breaking down the week can prevent feeling overwhelmed and stressed by the amount of work. Establish a routine Start school work at the same time every day. Go to bed at a reasonable hour, along with establishing a routine try and get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. Take breaks Our brains are not designed to sit in a spot for multiple hours. Set timers and take brain breaks every hour. In school, students naturally do this when changing classes. Helpful tips. Go to office hours - Teachers have office hours to answer questions or chat with students. Stay off screens - With digital learning, it is impossible to stay off a screen completely. Once the student has finished, their work go for a walk, play outside, read a book, play a game, create a meal, or even take a nap to catch up on sleep. As always, reach out with any concerns or questions. Claire
