How are our kids coping during Covid-19?

Father Dave and Mrs. Sheridan wish to share our concern for the mental and emotional health of our students. The anxiety, fear and isolation that is so pervasive right now is taking a heavy toll on everyone, but uniquely on our young people who just don’t have the life experience and faith experience to keep this all in a bigger context.
What should parents look for:
  • changes in mood that are not usual for your child
  • changes in behavior, such as stepping back from personal relationships
  • a lack of interest in activities previously enjoyed
  • a hard time falling or staying asleep, or starting to sleep all the time
  • changes in weight or eating patterns
  • problems with memory, thinking, or concentration
  • changes in appearance, such as lack of basic personal hygiene
  • an increase in risky or reckless behaviors
  • thoughts about death or suicide, or talking about it
We encourage every family to have open conversations with your tweens and teens about how they are feeling with all the changes Covid-19 brings. Here are some questions to begin this important conversation:
  • How are you feeling today, really? Physically and mentally.
  • What’s taking up most of your headspace right now?
  • How have you been sleeping? How do you want to improve your sleep?
  • What have you been doing for exercise?
  • What did you do today that made you feel good?
  • What's something you’re looking forward to in the next few days?
  • What's something you can do today that would make you feel good?
  • What are you grateful for right now?

Friday Schedule Change

In an effort to respond to teacher, parent and student feedback, we will be moving to an asynchronous Friday schedule. What's this mean?
  • Asynchronous learning is education, instruction and learning that does not require the teacher and students to be present at the same time.
  • Synchronous learning is education, instruction and learning that both the teacher and student are present for and participating in at the same time.
  • On Fridays, teachers will prepare and present material that can be done at the student's own pace. Recorded instruction, video clips, assigned work, and all other materials will be posted to Google Classroom. Instruction and work will be provided for every scheduled class that regularly occurs on a Friday.
  • Fridays will be a great day for teachers to host office hours, work in small groups, see students virtually for follow up, questions, and support. This is also a great time for students to have a screen break.
  • Teachers will be available via office hours, email and Google Classroom from 8am-3pm.
More detailed information for grades K-5 will come from your child's homeroom teacher. Grade 6-8 students are familiar with this process through our Spring digital learning program. We appreciate your support and flexibility as we develop a long term solution that best supports our teachers, our students and our parent community.

Gmail Settings for Students

All HT students have an @htsch Google account. Students in 3rd-8th grade are regularly using these accounts to access Google Classroom. We've heard student complaints that their email in-box is overloaded with notification emails (teacher posted an assignment, teacher posted a comment, due dates changed, etc). Katie Walker, our Digital Learning Coordinator, created a how-to for students to limit these notifications. We've encouraged all students to make these changes. Here is Mrs. Walker's How To document if you'd like to help your student manage their email inbox.
